It had been over a year since I touched Time Until, my event countdown app. I decided to spend some time on it and made some changes, including:

Got rid of the Alerts, which didn't work reliably

No longer update the window in real-time; it was kind of pointless since the Alerts weren't reliable

Fixed some memory leaks

Reduced the maximum number of events from 10 to 8 (so I don't need to worry about handing overflow of the window at lower resolutions)

The result is a leaner, but a still useful app. Judge that for yourself.

Watchtower 1.15 Released

I updated Watchtower again. It's a lost cause, but I can't help myself as I have an affinity for that app despite its trade offs. Nevertheless, I believe 1.15 is a worthwhile update. Here's why:

I refactored the FSEvents monitoring routines...again! I've probably modified this routine the most in the last 14 versions, but this change should be the final one. I was able to reduce memory usage and improve performance and fixed a couple of hidden bugs.

I removed the Touch ID support. The implementation broke on recent macOS versions and it was never particularly useful and it simplifies the overall code. I may add it back in future versions...we'll see.

I optimized a couple of other functions for performance and reliability.

I added confirmations when deleting Watch Paths and Rules.

MountBatten 1.04 Released

MountBatten 1.04 was released.

I added rudimentary Touch ID support for licensed users. If you enable this options, any attempt to change Mount Rules, delete them, stop monitoring, or even try to quit MountBatten, will prompt the user o authenticate. It does this once -- failing to authenticate will effectively lock the app. It can still run but stopping it or making any changes will require someone force-quitting the app.

This is meant to enforce a degree of security when used in shared Mac environments with roommates, spouses, children, relatives, or even co-workers.

Butterfly Collector 1.24 Released

I posted another update to Butterfly Collector. v1.24 has the following new features and changes:

I sped up the 'Import CSV from Revok' option, it is now 3-5x faster for larger CSVs

I made a bunch of internal changes to license input and validation, the date picker, and a few other functions: license validation is a bit more user friendly as it no longer throws an error immediately if you enter a wrong or incomplete key -- it simply won't accept it until you enter a valid one

More polish: I fixed some UI issues for menus and buttons that weren't disabled when they should be

The License key visibility toggle is no persistent across record selection. I also added a lock icon that shows the current state: open lock when the field is visible and a closed lock when the field is masked

Book 'em Danno got a nice upgrade. With the release of 1.05, it now supports FTS (full text search) as opposed to its original keyboard-oriented search. This enables Book 'em Danno to support a slew of more flexible search options, including:

Exact matching on tags and titles. For example, "cold war" will now exclude book entries that include "war" or "cold" and match items with "cold war" as a tag or as part of the title, description, or notes

The ability to include specific entries. For example, show books with the terms "video" and "games" together

Revok 1.18 contains a couple of important fixes and a new feature:

Bug fixes:

M4 CPUs didn't like v1.17 and crashed when running Revok under macOS Tahoe. Several users confirmed the issue seems to have been resolved with 1.18.

Some experimental AppleScript code snuck into v1.17 and was removed in v1.18. This probably didn't cause the crashes reported, but probably didn't help either. Due to how Revok works, I deciced not to enable AppleScript for it (it conflicts with scanning).

revok-cli has been updated to include the main fixes for scanning in v1.18 (they share a lot of code). If you detect a crash on an M4 and Tahoe when running the command line tool, please let me know since there are suffcient differences -- particularly in how they handle threading.

New Feature:

Revok 1.18 allows you to select a single scanned application and automatically copy its metadata to the Clipboard in text or JSON format from the context menu.

The ability to detect apps that use the Paddle or Firebase Frameworks; Paddle is used by many developers to handle licensing and diagnostics. Firebase is also used for diagnostics, but is a Google product. While both of these frameworks have very legitmate uses, some privacy-conscious users may not be comfortable with the data they send.

The ability to detect apps that use the Qt, Flutter, or Chromium Embedded Frameworks. While all of these are widely used, they may not use native macOS UI controls, and in the case of Chromium Embedded, they do not offer native performance.

revok-cli has been updated to detect these frameworks as well and now show percentage counts in the summary.

I just released Book 'em Danno 1.01. It features some nice enhancements and improvements, including:

A sort option, which allows you to sort the display of books in your collection in six different ways (e.g., title, author, publisher, genre, publication date, and modification date)

Basic support for AZW3 (Kindle) format E-Books. They are basically a flavor of the MOBI format, so it wasn't that difficult. However, importing them is particularly slow due to the complex format

Improved E-Book importing with logic to smooth out the overall experience -- especially in cases where MOBI and AZW3 files are imported alongside EPUBs

v1.05 has some really nice new features and bug fixes, including:

Both the Total Cost of Licenses calculation and the Cost Analytics Tab will factor in license expiration dates to produce more accurate cost estimates, which means that if you have an app with a $10 USD monthy subscription that ends on 1 Jan 2026, it will only calculate the costs through the rest of 2025

Watchtower 1.09 Released

Watchtower 1.09 has just been released. This is an important update and here's why:

I added a new Directory-level monitoring mode, which restricts Watchtower to only detect broad changes in files in watched directories (and not detect changes in individual files) I did this because this requires a lot less memory compared to the file-level monitoring capability.

I added logic to detect whether existing file-level monitoring rules can be used in Directory-level monitoring mode.

I implimented some additional optimizations for file-level monitoring, including aggressively flushing memory buffers and periodically restarting the monitoring observer while recovering events. As a result, Watchtower burns through memory at a much slower rate than in earlier versions.

You can now clear thw Watchtower events log via a menu option.

Watchtower 1.01 Released

I'm excited to announce a new app that I think will be interesting to many of you. It's called Watchtower and its a lightweight menu bar utility that uses Apple's FSEvents API to monitor the directories you specify for specific file events such as a file being created, moved to the Trash, renamed, deleted, or changing ownership and then triggering an action such as logging the event, displaying an Alert, launch an app, or playing a sound.

How is this useful?

Well, imagine you want to monitor apps that install login items without your permission? Or, avoid accidentally deleting an important file you're working on, or you want to know when a an external drive is connected to your Mac (especially if it isn't yours!), and a whole bunch of other things in-between.

Like some of my other apps, Watchtower is Donation-ware, which means it can be used free-of-charge, albeit with a time-delay nag screen and the the ability to monitor fewer directories and leverage fewer rules. A one-time Donation of $5 USD will earn anyone a lifetime license that removes the nag screen and removes the monitoring and rule restrictions.

You can learn more and give it a try from here:

Improved Malware scanning: it supports more signals in files when their hashes are not in its database and it will skip scanning very large files to speed up scanning since most Malware is found in smaller app files

Added more fine grained scoring of files to reduce the chance that file hashes not found in the database are not unintentionally flagged as Malware

Added the ability to page through large lists of files in the table using Shift+Up arrow and Shift+Down arrow

Added better support for handling Malware database downloads in case of source errors, such as preserving the existing database

You can now sort by the Status column in the table to highlight both suspected and identified malicious files by clicking on the header

Beta available - File Fingerprints 1.12, which can scan for Malware

I'm excited to announce the availability for File Fingerprints 1.12, which can now scan for and identify selected Malware. I decided to add this capability after realizing a couple of months ago that being able to compute file hashes at scale was the foundation of how most Malware and virus scanners work. So, I did an integration with a known Malware research organization and voilà, I made a working version.

This is just the first version and there plenty of refinements to make. For the next version, I plan to have a more complete set of macOS-compatible Malware signatures for the app to use and add the abiility to optionally quartine Malware as well as fix any obvious bugs or crashes.

I was a bit over zealous in releasing Revok 1.14 last week as there was a user who had a high-end Mac where it crashed. After analyzing the code, I made some changes, which should reduce RAM usage and improve scanning speed. The following is a table that summarizes the projected differences between the current and previous versions:

Two more app updates for Command Keeper and Revok!

Command Keeper 1.19: Adds the ability to share specific command snippets using macOS' Sharing Services menu. This means you can share command snippets via Messages, Apple Mail, pass them to Apple Notes, the Shortcuts app, or other app services you may have installed.

Revok 1.13: I optimized the methods to fetch the Launch Count and App Installed Date metadata attributes, which can easily shave 5-10 seconds off a scan. I also added file ownership metadata (e.g., was the file created by root or the admin user, etc.) and fixed some minor JSON and CSV export bugs. revok-cli was also updated to version 1.04 and benefits from the same speed improvements.

Command Keeper 1.17 Released

As promised, I fixed the known issue with Command Keeper which did not render snippets properly when run on macOS Tahoe Beta 4. It seems that macOS Tahoe changed how some UI elements are rendered from previous macOS versions, so I added logic to force macOS 26 to perform UI redraw, which seems to resolve the problem. Yay!

Since macOS Betas are not always representative of the final macOS release, things could change, but for now the problem has been solved. The other change I added to version 1.17 is improving the export of the command snippet JSON, which should ensure that a valid JSON file is actually generated.

macOS Tahoe and Command Keeper

I checked out Command Keeper on Beta4 of macOS Tahoe with a large database and it seems there's a weird rendering issue where command snippets don't change when scrolling or paging through entries. It seems that macOS Betas tend to break the rendering of certain UI elements. Looking at various developer bug reports, it seems its tied to the Beta and other apps are having similar issues. As I have time this week, I'll work on adding a forced redraw that should clear up the issue.

At the same time, this can change. Apple tends to focus on different aspects with each Beta release and may relax or even increase certain behaviors while trying to isolate different bugs and features. Until macOS Tahoe drops in November, the behavior can change widely.

Nevertheless, I'm aware of it and it shouldn't impact your use of Command Keeper in the long-run.

Upper Volta 1.15 Released

Upper Volta, my lightweight replacement for macOS' battery status indicator has been updated after over year! This version is completely re-written and now uses documented macOS functions to show the battery status, which makes it richer than before and more performant.

One of its nicer features is the ability to display key battery attributes at the same time, side-by-side. For example, you can see whether its charging, the estimated time left, percentage remaining, and even temperature all at the same time. The only limit is the width of your menu bar!

301 cycles • 72% • 09:45 left

Command Keeper 1.13 Released

Command Keeper has been updated again!

It now supports what I call "Placeholder Variables" which get dynamically expanded when inserted into the Terminal. For example,
find {_docs_} -user {_user_}
will appear as
find /Users/dingleberry/Documents/ -user dingleberry
. which can save you typing. There are placeholders supported for common Mac directories, time and date stamps, and various user functions.

There is a new setting that automatically closes the main UI window if you click away from it.

It will now display a nag screen that appears for 18 seconds unless you enter a valid, lifetime license key. If you Buy me a Coffee for $3 USD, I will email you one. The key is not required, but the nag screen will always appear each time you use Command Keeper.

Made an update to Trash Buddy Plus. It now uses a tag to display the count of items in the Trash instead of just text. This not only looks better, but also completes compatibility with macos Tahoe.

Some important changes...

I recently developed a simple license key generation and validation system and have incorporated into a few of my apps. I decided to take this approach because I felt it was the best balance between giving users an opportunity to assess a given app's value while being a little more proactive in encouraging donations. In rolling out a license system, I'm operating under these principles:

(1) I want to keep the license mechanism simple and don't want to overly burden users;

(2) I don't want to cripple my apps; they will remain fully functional though some extra features may not be available or there may be annoying nag screens;

(3) I don't want to charge too users too much. Licenses are just $3 USD and they are good for the lifetime of the app they're used with. In addition, there are no restrictions on how many Macs they can be used with;

(4) Most of my apps are and will continue to be free and won't require a license at all.

Currently, two of my apps (Command Keeper and Breakin') currently require license keys. However, any of my previous supporters via Gumroad or Buy me a Coffee will receive a complimentary license for either or both of these programs upon request!

Command Keeper 1.12 Released

I pushed a small update to Command Keeper. The changes are generally minor, but may be useful for some folks:

It now uses a thread when displaying the Settings menu, which previously could periodically hang on some machines since it checks for the existence of apps like iTerm, Warp, and Ghostty. (It never exhibited this behavior on my personal machines, but did on my work machine, which also has various security software running on it)

Added threading and locks to the database calls to ensure exclusive access to the data during every operation and prevents a race condition. This makes the database access much safer and more robust.

Revok breakage on macOS 15.5 fixed!

Good news! The bug was on my end, not Apple's. I had some shoddy code that is now fixed. In the process, I also made some improvements:

Made scanning other application folders optional, which will speed up scans. You can also scan "System" apps now like the Terminal, Stocks, and others.

The Find text feature now will find partial matching app names and you can find the next match as well. Pressing the Command+G key will also advance to the next match.

Smoothed out scanning performance so it uses less CPU across more systems. Scanning speed shouldn't be materially impacted.

Added a Category summary feature if you press Command+I when the window is open to see a count of how many snippets exist for each Category in your current collection

Time Until Issues Now Resolved

I was so proud of myself when I released Time Until 1.04 in April with the ability to create custom category tags. That feature would look at the text for the category and assign it a random color based on the input. Cool, eh? Sort of... it also generated some garish and difficult-to-see color combinations, so I changed it in v1.05 and randomly assigned one of 10 pre-defined, but legible color combinations. So what? Well, in doing that I seem to have introduced a bug that seemed to crash Time Until after a few days use.

After a couple of failed attempts, the latest build of Time Until 1.05 has been used reliably for a few days now, so I believe that crash to have been fixed! Fingers crossed!
